All of the Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities helped me in completing our group project assignment, however, the three most important were Discipline Specific Knowledge, Cognitive Skills and Soft Skills. The capability of discipline specific knowledge allowed me to what the lecturer taught us in the class. This ability to understand the lecturer is necessary as it helped us to think further based on the theory we learnt. Cognitive skills, including lifelong learning and problem-solving skills, can be the foundation for all learning. Cognitive skills are the tools we use to handle every bit of information we encounter throughout the life. It allowed us to think about the ideas, focus on the topics and plan what we should write in this project. Another important Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities that helped us in completing our group project credited to the Soft Skills. Soft Skills include communication skills, interpersonal skills and intrapersonal skills. It is personal attributes which let us to fit in the group and enhance our interaction and performance. Communication in group project can be fairly important, the absence of any skills would not lead us to the success of this project.
We have met some challenges in doing this assignment and the first difficulty before we even started the project was that the other projects distributed by other lecturers were due on the same period, so we were kind of distracted by those projects. Just by arranging the meeting time has already posted us problems because sometimes our group members already had appointments with other project’s member. Moreover, we held our own opinions, and clashed against the others during our discussion. The dissenting voices sometimes embarrassed us from reaching a consensus. Our project thus crawled along because of diversified opinions.
Working in a group allows us to be able to effectively get the assignment done. One of the best part of working in group is that I learned how to work in a team. Collaboration is important to ensure us to smoothly and successfully reach our goal. Our group worked well together so we could achieve much more than individuals working on our own. Every group members have their own talents that they are particularly good at, therefore, a broader range of skills can be applied to such practical activities and sharing and discussing ideas can play a vital role in deepening our understanding of this subject. Being part of a group can also help me in developing my interpersonal skills such as speaking and listening as well as team working skills (e.g. working with and motivating others). These skills will definitely be useful in my future career and valued by my future employers.
We did not select a leader, so all of us are ordinary group members.Without a leader, we assigned the task upon mutual agreement and started working on it. I think an ordinary group member and a leader is equally important as they are the one who get things done. I was happy with other group members' works, just that we made slow progress without a leader. Therefore, I think a leader is still an indispensable role in a group.
More than half in our class are international students who have their own distinct culture and backgrounds that are different from mine. People with different background usually have different mindset and that is where I have learned much from them. Working in a group with members who have diversified background, we were able to overcome our shortcomings by learning from others' strong points.
I think I have done well in respecting other peoples values and ideas and being clear about my point. I was in charge of designing the restaurant settings and drawing the restaurant floor plan by using Autocad. I always kept other members updated of the progress of the restaurant floor plan with detailed explanation. Whenever they have their opinions or ideas, I would respect them and considered their opinions and tried fitting it into the floor plan. However, there are also misunderstanding about responsibilities between me and other members, and I think this is the part that I did not do well. Due to miscommunication, we overlapped the task of finding suitable blocks for our restaurant, causing inefficient works.
